After never getting an HP USB model working, I ordered this APS drive knowing from other mac users that it was fairly popular and worked with little trouble on macs... I've just gotten the APS drive, though, and I'm still having the same problems! Toast won't recognize the drive, Silverlining won't even recognize anything on the USB bus. I installed the included drivers, I've tried all sorts of extension combonations including turning all off at startup and using Mac OS base set with only the APS drivers added, I uninstalled and reinstalled Toast and the drivers, I've tried everything I can think of. I occasionally use USB mice and keyboards with the machine (a Y2k Powerbook Firewire) with no trouble, so I'm not sure where the problem lies.

I'm fairly new to the Mac world and this CD-RW has been my first peripheral purchase, so if anyone has additional suggestions for me to try, please let me know. This is really becoming frustrating!

I am at work and not on my mac, so I can't look up the required extensions for you at this point. I have been really happy with the APS burner, so I don't think there is anything wrong with it for you, just some fussy extension conflict that should be easy to solve (and isn't). Some basic questions:

1) if you put a cd in the aps drive, will it mount on the desktop? Can you hear it spinning up? Does the apple system profiler see the drive on the USB bus when you have a CD in it?

2) Did you upgrade from 8.6 to 9.0? There is an old 8.6 extension that conflicts with the later drivers; I had problems until I turned that off (APS sent info about this with the burner). Have you upgraded to 9.04?

3) are you plugging the drive directly into your powerbook? They don't recommend using a hub, so you may want to try that.

4) have two cd drives does cause some confusion; more for me with playing cds, since sometimes the cd player will get set on the other cd drive, and I have to manually switch it to the correct drive. I seem to remember Toast preferences that may involve selecting the cdrw? Can you make a selection there? You could look if there are toast preferences in your system folder and trash those, and then restart your computer and relaunch toast and see if the drive shows up there.

5) any problems booting your computer with the drive plugged in? Have you tried to boot without it plugged in, and then hot plugging it in? Does it do anything if you unplug it and then plug it back in?

Good luck. I'll let you know if I can find anything of significance on my computer at home.
