That is the PDS - Processor Direct Slot, reserved mainly for the optional High Performance Video card that boasted upgradability to a whopping 2 MB
It is now used for processor upgrades that include an adapter to continue using said card by "borrowing" a Nubus slot for position only.
As far as the USB/FW, good luck. I just scored an AsanteFast 10/100BT Nubus NIC for $35 ($180 new) and was surprised that even existed.
