The New York Times reported on a new product called Securikey. It uses software and a USB key to lock a system from prying eyes. It's overpriced at $800 for five users, but the upsetting thing is this is Windows only. This is made by Griffin Technology, which previously only made iMic and other Mac-specific peripherals.

I don't consider the Securikey itself a great loss, but it may be the first step down the slippery slope for Griffin. Like I said, it's overpriced and I don't like the thought of USB keys always jutting out of the backs of my TiBooks. And Windows XP could use the help with security more than OS X does. Anybody know of a similar PCMCIA-based product? Might as well use that slot for something.

You're right. But the Times mistakenly identified them as Griffin Technology, not Technologies. Now why can't somebody do something similar with the Mac, and a lot cheaper? All it would take is one of those USB pen drives loaded with an encryption key and some software. OS X surely has enough security features to take it most of the way.
