I have an Epson Stylus 740 connected via USB that decided not to print today. When troubleshooting, I saw that it would let me select my printer in the choose, but it gave me no option of how to connect.

I checked all connections, fine. Software was installed, fine.

The only thing I've done since it was working was to install QT4P3 and Netscape 6. I uninstalled both, no luck. I re-installed the printer drivers, no luck. I re-installed OS 9.1 and the printer drivers, no luck.

I really need to get this working ASAP. I don't know what is wrong or what I possibly could have done.

Please help.

Does the printer show up in the Devices tab in Apple System Profiler (ASP) when powered on?

If so, there is a SW conflict or something getting in the way. ASP is a good way to "inventory" what your system sees. Be sure that all of Epsons USB libs are in the proper place.

Do you have the latest driver? (EPSON Stylus Driver Updater v 1.0cEs ) http://support.epson.com/hardware/pr...lelibrary.html

If the printer isn't in ASP, try connecting the printer directly into the computer.

Try swapping the cable with another. I have heard that some of the shorter (<=6 foot) USB cables are causing trouble due to a cheaper quality than longer cables (10') in other hardware industries.

This is when you are happy that USB is hot-swappable

Is it connected via a hub, or direct? I don't think it matters, unless the hub is dead or that port is bad.

Personally, I am running G4 AGP/OS9.1 with an Epson 760. No troubles so far.

Post your discoveries. Maybe someone else has similar issues.

Until I can spend some more time on this, please read through this, if you can.

I too have the Epson 740i printer on my G3 Yosemite. Sometimes the Chooser fails to offer port options for my printer and only shows printer/modem port. I found that if I wait for several seconds the option for USB shows up. Just seems to take it's own sweet time. Sometimes closing and reopening the Chooser does the trick.

Don't feel too stupid. It is only natural to go for the guts of the problem, w/o looking at something like that.

I'm glad you shared your problem. My cart lites are flashing (low ink), but I would have never guessed that the printer would remove itself from the bus over an empty ink cart.

Hmm. Interesting.
