We're in desperate need of a new 19" monitor for my creative director. She heard about KDS monitors from some guy at a Mac shop. Does anyone have any experience with KDS monitors? Also, I know that ViewSonic offers a very reasonably priced 19" monitor. But at the last place I worked we bought three brand new ViewSonic monitors for all the designers, and everyone one of them had to be sent back within a year for repairs or a replacement. We're wanting to go with something a little cheaper because we're planning on upgrading the whole department withing the next twelve months, but her monitor just went out on us today.

I have no experience with the KDS, but work with a guy that has one and loves it. I have a 19" Hitachi SuperScan 715 that I got for $336 (with shipping) from Page Computer (www.pagecomputer.com) and it looks great. .22 dot pitch, 1600x1200. It is one of the cheapest 19" monitors I've seen and looks like a much more expensive model.

Don't get KDS, they suck, go for the Viewsonics for a cheaper solution (iiYamas for an awesome solution).

I have two Viewsonic 19" monitors. The PS790 and the E790. I've had each of them for more than a year and haven't had any real problems.

Maybe your designers had the bad habit of licking the screen or placing Hello Kitty stickers on the vents on the side of the monitor. I only hug mine every few weeks, and that seems to keep them happy.

All I can say is I'm VERY happy with the 19" Viewsonic A90 I bought a couple weeks ago. It'll do 1600x1200, too. It was $350 with a $50 rebate at the local OfficeDepot, which made it the same price as the 19" KDS there (not including tax). I have a lot of respect for Viewsonic monitors, just from their reputation and the experiences of my friends.

The rebate, I think, is not exclusive to Office Deopt and available until the end of the year.

I was going to go with a 17" for my spiffy new G4/500 DP, but opted for the 19" instead, and I'm glad I did. (Unreal Tournament at 1024x768 in 32-bit color looks great :-)

Cheers,

Dave Corder
