I replaced my external firewire QPS cdrw for a Pioneer A03.
It burns cdr's, but how do I burn a DVDR?

It says "invalid field in CDB"

and then :
"Toast cannot write the data in MACos standardformat, please switch to macos extended."

how do I initialise a DVDR? it's a Maxell. IT IS NOT REWRITABLE.

big H E L P

who should i turn to to ask for support.
the manufacturer of the burner (PIONEER)
the manufacturer of the fireiwrecase (QPS)
manufacturer of my powerbook G4(Apple Corporation)
manufacturer of TOAST 5 (ROXIO)

I also bought a DVDRW meanwhile, the drive doesn't seem to support this general use 4.7 Gb DVDRW. Toast says there is no disk in the drive. The burner indicated thru LEDlight there is not a recordable disk in the drive

man, you've been posting all over the place, you must really be desperate!

first, are you in 9 or X?

second, are you sure just swapping the CDRW from your Que external with the A03 works? have you tried the drive on any other machine? sure, it looks like you could just swap them out, since Que also sells the same A03 in the same case, but who knows?

third, have you tried any other DVD-R media, besides the maxell, and besides the philips DVD-RW? like maybe an actual pioneer brand media, or apple's own?

fourth, have tried unplugging the drive, and plugging it back in again? yeah, it sounds stupid, but it works for a lot of stuff.

also, didn't you mention in another post that you are using the latest version of Toast, 5.1.2? according to Roxio, all external firewire burners should be recognized under 5.1 and later.

is your external DVD-R recognized by Apple System Profiler? if so, what's the device/firmware number for the A03?

i'm sure there's someone here that can help you, but you need to give more specific info on your system, besides just the software error dialogs you are getting. i mean, it may not be toast, it may be hardware related...

The BX12 works best when it is connected with the 6529. However, I have found that when I use the MSG 567 with it, all is well that ends well.

I thought you had to have that DVD software from Apple. I forgot what it is called. There are two versions, the cheap version that comes with the Superdrive and the expensive pro version that you buy seperately

Maybe someone else knows.</STRONG>
Yeah, you're right. trying to burn a DVD with Toast isn't going to work. You need the Apple DVD burner. You can burn a VideoCD, though.

ummm...that's wrong. yes you can burn a DVD in Toast.

i think people may be confusing creating Video DVD's with creating data DVD's. if you want to make a video DVD, then yes, you will need either iDVD2 or DVD Studio Pro (but i believe iDVD2 won't work with external superdrives). However, if you want to create data DVD's, Toast wil let you do this. the procedure is just like burning CD-R's: drag and drop, then record.

Hi, I posted this topic.

Everything is working 100% now.

The cause of the problem was an improper introduction to the Pioneer a03 DVDrecorder. It appears that Philips and Pioneer both have a different standard in Recordable DVD's.

Pioneer uses DVD-RW
Philips uses DVD+RW
Only insiders seem to know this.

They cannot understand eachother. Yes, that's is not a good start, if you were convinced DVD is a universal standard (exept the regioncode thing) and are fooling around with the wrong recordable.

Another problem was Toast 5. You must select in the "other"tab that you want to burn a DVD. After that Toast isn't asking for extended file format.

wait, so your main problem was that you had the wrong media???

well, that clears up a lot.

first of all, let me point out that DVD+RW is NOT a format that complies with the standards set forth by the DVD forum. that's why DVD+RW drives and media do not have the DVD logo on them.

as for the Toast "other" tab, that's suprising, because i never have to do that to burn a DVD. it treats it just like a CD-R, no need to explicitly tell toast that i want to burn a DVD-R.
