I want to download data from DV and GPS to my cube. Both of them use RS-232c serial. And both of their drivers have only pc version.
Can I download them by using a usb serial adapter in VPC?
There are quite a few adapter out there, which is the best? Keyspan Twin ?

DV - panasonic 400
GPS - garmin etrex

A Keyspan Twin adaptor works fine with a Garmin GPS12, and should be good for the etrex as well. For Mac software, I use GPSy, which is great (www.gpsy.com; I also obtained a Garmin to Mac serial adaptor cable from them), and also StreetAtlas 6. This arrangment also works with VPC, using Topo! (www.topo.com) or other mapping software under VPC (I assume it would work fine with the software Garmin supplies, as well). The current Beta version of Topo! for the Mac does not yet support GPS

Not sure about the GPS stuff, but I am using a momentum uConnect serial adapter. It does not provide 2 active ports, but one Mac serial (round 8 pin) and a PC serial (9 pin shaped like a VGA port). I got this one because the device I was using it with is made for use with PCs and has the 9 pin serial connector. I had a hard time finding a Mac serial to PC serial cable.

Based on the info. you provided your devices use the PC style connector and you probably do not have the Mac serial to PC serial cable that you will need to use with the keyspan converter unless the devices use Mac serial connectors or the keyspan converter provides PC serial connectors.

The keyspan might be better in support. The uConnect drivers are old and the web site is unorganized. I only use the uConnect on occasion and that amount of data transfered is not much, but it has worked well from the mac and VPC.

For questions, please drop a note to anevay@shreve.net as well as this forum.
