I just bought a 40GB fantom drive (external firewire) to go with my iBook and it sounds like a vacuum cleaner! Are they all this loud? I know the pocket drives are probably fanless, but they were much more expensive.

You can make it quiet by taking out the fan. Of course ,the HD won't last long with the constant overheating.

My LaCie 80GB Firewire is pretty loud too. Seems to me those fans could be made quieter. They'd probably cost more then though.

I recently bought an external FireWire LaCie 40gig drive. And it really doesn't seem too noisey to me. Just a subtle whirring from it's fan. The portable versions of these drives should be quieter as they are fanless. But then they use smaller, lower performance laptop type drives too. Which won't suit everyones needs.

I really notice the noise because I have always used a laptop; my desk at home has been a quiet place until now...

I have an 80GB "Elite" external FW drive from OWC. It is exteremly quite. I don't hear a fan, but if the room is very quite, you can hear the disks spinning. Truly, a very nice drive.
