Hi there, I have a small problem, basically I got an external DVD rewriter as a Christmas present;
LG 16x external super multi DVD/CD rewriter GSA-2166D, which does'nt appear to
work with OSX, as you can imagine this is very fustrating, any suggestions what I can get
instead?
Thanks in advance.
K.

hello kruger79,
From my experience, it seems that most external hardware (printers, scanners, burners, cameras, etc.) work on both Windows and Macs. If you can give me the brand and the model number, I can try to find a driver for you.

Otherwise, you can find one on eBay at http://computers.listings.ebay.com:8...istingItemList

If you find one on eBay that you think you want, but you aren't sure, then you can post the Item # here and someone can try to tell you, or even make a reccomendation.

I performed a search for you, and I was not only able to find the driver, but also not able to find much other information. If it's a USB driver (which it most likely is), then it might have Plug and Play (http://www.answers.com/Plug%20and%20Play). What happens when you plug it in?

Have you tried patchburn?

If you can't get the LG working, punt it and get a Pioneer DVR-110D and an Oxford based enclosure.

Ok, basically what happens is that if i stick in a cd/dvd with stuff on it (as opposed to a blank cd/dvd)
it reads the cd/dvd if I however put a blank one in, it simply does'nt appear on the desktop.
I have contact LG, searched their web site but found no support as such for OSX. All the software they provide is for PC only it appears. It uses a USB connection by the way.
What exactly is Patchburn?

You'll need PatchBurn to make OS X create a "profile" for your DVD burner. Then afterwhich, you'll probably need Toast to burn your files.

That's what I do.

Check these guys out. They and Charles Moore's right ups over at PowerbookCentral.com is where I first heard of Patchburn and now include all needed drivers for most Macs using OS 9.2-10.xxx on an included CD.

And just to add. If you feel apprehensive about custom drivers and patches being installed on your system. All they really do is include model numbers of the device you're using, because the manufacturer and Apple don't care to get together and include a few extra hand typed characters written in Basic computer language embedded in the Authoring support files.

This industry is so lazy.

xlr8yourmac.com has been providing instructions for do it your selfers for years with ResEdit. It's quite simple when you see what little it takes to make a device talk with your computer. Stick with Panasonic brands or Matsushita mechanisms. LG has developed a name of cheapness with Mac optical drives. Sony is good.

I have a Sony mechanism external HP9600 SCSI CDRW meant for PC that I use with my 5 year old Pismo Powerbook that burns cd's in 10 minutes. Plug and play, but I have to use Toast to burn CD's. Won't boot using the C Key. Make sure you get a model that does or at least boots using the alt key or Mac Startup select in software.

The sound and feel of this device is so much more powerful and stable than the LG 8080B stock DVD-rom drive that came with my pismo which now no longer plays dvds.
