hi,

I recently bought an Iomega USB zip drive, and I'm dismayed to find first of all that the build quality is shamefully cheap and that it's unbelievable noisy as well. All kinds of strange noises that no drive should ever make -- like somebody is scraping metal on metal someplace.

anybody else have experience with these clunkers? did i just get a dud, or are they all like that?

Iomega makes craaaap. I've only had bad experiences with their sh!t. Jaz drives, Zip drives, whatever... Better off burnin' cds for backup cuz them cartridges and disks are definitely not for the faint of heart! And they're filthy expensive. Mechanics is poor, assembly is laughable, they're the «RadioShack no name brand» of 'puter peripherals.
this lounge is a poor substitute to the bbq.

My Iomega parallel port zip 100 worked fine for me for years, until I gave it to my sister... It's worked fine for her also for over a year. During that time I've been running a Iomega 250 MB zip USB drive (not bus-powered) and it works great too, as does my Iomega 250 IDE internal drive for my PC.

Two of my colleaugues have parallel port drives that have worked fine for years, and USB has been working fine for them too.

Now if people are expecting their zip media discs to last a long time then they're in for a shock. Zip is NOT archival. It is a floppy replacement. I regularly backup to CD-R (although so far I haven't had a problem with my zips).

Speaking of iomega disks....I erased a 40 meg click disk and now the hip zip player won't recognize the disk to play the mp3's, shows up on the mac like a data disk fine though. I downloaded the lastest Iomega software and re-formatted the disk using that but still no go. Other people had the same prob in the Iomega user forum but no answers....weak! I am going to try and re-format on a PC this weekend and hope it fixes it!

I've always had great fortune with my iomega Zip drives. I've owned 4 of them both 100s and 250s, internal and external, USB and FireWire.

For shuttleing info to and fro between two FireWire laptops, there's no equal.

Have two Zip 100 (SCSI) now for about 5 years, and only problems with a defect media once.
