Hi,

I have an iPod on order and I keep reading about how it can be firmware upgraded. What exactly can be achieved with firmware upgrades. How much could the functions of the iPod change? Can it add extra features to the iPod just by updating the firmware?

I own a Rio 500 and one of their firmware upgrades improved the volume level and equaliser settings of the player. Could an iPod update add the equaliser controls that are currently lacking on the device, and I don't mean synching the individual iTunes equaliser settings, I mean adding an onboard equaliser that you could change on the fly on the device?

What potential is there for adding features via a firmware upgrade? How far can it be pushed, how advanced can it get?

Richard

I'm thinking that programming in functionality like a clock/alarm wouldn't be too far off. It already has timing capabilities. The scroll wheel lends itself to setting times, etc. I'm also hoping to see the eq/xfading.

But, the most important thing about the firmware upgradability is this: We will always be ahead of the xpod poseurs. At least for a little while. Maybe permanently after the first upgrade. Would you want some cheap hack upgrading the firmware on your computer? For things like that, I wouldn't trust anyone but the source...

Agreed. Although when I had my Rio, even updates from the source felt like nothing but cheap hacks. Thank God for Apple!
