I'm a college student studying multimedia, and I'm looking for an additional monitor. A relative of mine offered to sell me his 20" Applevision 850AV, for a very reasonable price. I was just wondering if anyone had experience with those, and could tell me the pros and cons. From what I can find this seems like a very good monitor, so unless I find out something about them I'm going to go for it. Any help would be great!
Thanks,
~Jesse

Apple's displays are generally of high quality. If the monitor doesn't have an issue right now, chances are that it won't for a very long time, if ever. Turn on the monitor and give it a once-over at various resolutions to make sure that the display is sharp and colors vivid... if it looks ok, I'd grab it.

I had a MultipleScan 20 (5 year old monitor) up until earlier this year, when I replaced it with a 21" Studio Display. Both have been flawless.

I agree with Misha, Apple moniters are as a whole very good displays. Aside from the Apple Multiple Scan 1705 and 720, all the Apple displays I've ever used have been of the highest quality. The AppleVision 850 display is beautiful.

I have an 850 that is on my new G4-MP500. Was on a cyborg'd 8500 before that. Only issue I have with it is trouble getting ColorSync to work(the monitor is ADB and the G4 is USB) Otherwise, a BEAUTIFUL monitor. Just got a Griffin I-Mate adapter but haven't had time to play with it. Bought the monitor for 180.00 from a local "hack-shop". z4m

In the time I was a tech I never saw an 850 monitor pass through. We sold plenty though. Nice screen. Sony tube.

Monitors to avoid at all costs are any applevision 17 inch displays or the blue 17" apple studio display. Some say the 750 was okay but I have one that is terrible.

Yes, the AppleVision 750's has some issues - although the older AppleVision 1710 series had even more. Sporadic failures of the tubes and circuit boards seemed to be the major causes of trouble and failure. Refurbished units that replace the shoddy original parts seem to work very well though - I use a refurbished AppleVision 1710AV display that was refurbed over three years ago, and it's great.
