If you've been reading the other threads here you'll see that I was struggling to get the iPod Updater utility to run under OS 9.1. Well, I figured that problem out, but in the course of my investigation I found something interesting.
The iPod Updater is not so much a program as it is a "package" that contains both OS 9 and X versions of the program. I copied the "Firmware" file in the package and opened it up as plain text in MS Word. Here are some of the more interesting portions:
January February March April May June July August September October November December Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sun Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat am pm %A, %d %B, %Y %I:%M:%S %p %d %B, %Y %H:%M:%S %-m-%-d %-I:%M%1p %-m-%-d %b %-d %-m-%-d-%y %b %-d, %Y %-I:%M%p %-I:%M m/ d/ Y : TLocaleDateTimeResource not found, using default date time record for ISO C instead
Bass Booster Bass Reducer Classical Dance Deep Electronic Hip Hop Jazz Latin Loudness Lounge Piano Pop R & B Rock Small Speakers Spoken Word Treble Booster Treble Reducer Vocal Booster
ÍVideo Aux Stereo Mix Mono Mix Phone File Line In Radio Mic CD Digital S/P-DIF Unknown
It looks like clock and calendar features are there in the Firmware...they're just hidden somehow. Oh! That would be so great...one more item off my iPod wishlist.

Yeah, that looks nice. i am sure that the EQ will come eventually, along with various cool stuff.
However. i am worried that these feature will be enabled, but only in iPod 2 or something. Now that would be a right pain in the arse - that would *really* annoy the early adopters.
I have just had a thought: those "mystery" contacts around the headphone socket. Perhaps they are a digital audio out function? or a combined headphone controller AND digital out???
What does everyone think about that, btw? Will Apple screw us like this?

The other thing to consider is that, if you should retire your iPod and
eventually move to another device, you now have a very fast portable
firewire hard drive with built in video game, mp3 player and other items.

Wait a second.....
Time and datebook?
Radio? As in "it's not just an mp3 player but a radio too?"
Line in? For on the spot audio recording?
SP/DIF? This might explain the odd connector points by the output jack.
SP/DIF is used in digital audio recording situations. My Roland digital
8-track recorder has a SP/DIF connector for sending/receiving files in
the digital domain. Could it be they're seeing this as a way for musicians
to transfer and record files on location?
Whoa. The future looks extremely intriguing.

Sorry, I should have explained the S/P-DIF earlier so as to put my point accross much better.
[wild speculation] perhaps the iPod has something to do with an Apple developed music authoring piece of software??? hrm...who have the bought up recently! [/wild speculation]
qnc: Nahh, i am very happy with my iPod as it is (Bob, as he is affectionatly called), but it would just be nice to see cool firmware updates extending to older iPod.

Hi, I was wondering if you could explain to me the problems you had loading the updater on 9.1. I will have to do the same. Also, have you had any problems running itunes2.2 nd th eipod on your 9.1? I ordered one and am not even sure if it will work. Did you also have to update firmware and authoring support or is it lready in there(or part of 1.1).
Many thanks...

Matthew,
Nope I haven't had a single problem running iTunes 2 (I just used the version that came with the iPod). The iPod itself functions perfectly with my OS 9.1 machine. The problem I had with the iPod Updater Utility was traced to my CarbonLib extension. If you don't wish to update your OS to 9.2, then you can just update your CarbonLib extension to version 1.4. That will solve any problems with the iPod Updater. I think I did install Authoring Support along with iTunes 2, but it's kind of a moot point because I don't have a CD-R attached to my Mac. No, I didn't have to update any firmware.
A word of warning about the iPod Updater: If you're pulling it off of the "unofficial" sites be warned that this utility was pulled for a reason. Evidently running the "Update" command could toast the iPod's MP3 capabilities. However, I have heard from several people that the "Restore" command works beautifully. This is the feature that I'm after, especially considering the fact that I'll do a lot of experimenting with my iPod.
Good luck!
