Despite the sound turned on, I am unable to hear my (internal) modem dialing on my iMac DV.

Any ideas?

make sure that you have sound turned on in both the modem control panel and the sound control panel. if one or the other has sound turned off, you're not going to hear the modem screeching.

There's a check box on the modem control panel that allows you to turn the sound off or on. I can't imagine why you'd want to hear the shrieking of electrons, but if you do, turn on the noise in the Modem CP.
And that's true too.--Shakespeare, King Lear

Control Panel was OK. (BTW, can it be called a control panel if it's in your System Folder and not in your control panels folder?)

Turns out it was the sound control panel.

Thanks.

well, a control panel is something you'll find in your control panels folder, and can be either a "control panel" or an application. basically, it adds functionality to your machine while letting you alter some of the added functionality's settings.

extensions on the other hand, do pretty much the same thing as control panels, insofar as they add functionality. however, they don't provide a way of tinkering with the settings. you can either add the function by putting it in the folder or remove it by de-installing the extensions.

so, it's not really that anything in your system folder can be called a control panel, but that different things in your system folder do essentially the same sort of thing.
