In order to burn CDs in OS X with my Que!Fire 8x4x32 CDRW drive, I need the 1.07 firmware, not the 1.05 firmware with which it shipped. QPS has a firmware updater available on the (QPS Web Site, but it is for Wintel boxes only. I tried running the updater using VPC 3.0 with Windows 98, but Windows does not recognize the drive. I am having trouble finding a Wintel user with Firewire. Has anyone found a work-around?

Nope. You can't do it with VPC.

I have been looking for a PC with FireWire for over a year. No luck.

Take the CD-RW drive out of the Que Fire case, install the mech into a PC (owned by someone who knows thier way around hardware) on the internal IDE chain and run the firmware update. (How on earth is it that Apple can ignore the fact that drives need firmware updates on occasion anyway? Too weird.)

If all you have is VPC, try this: Install the drive mech. internally in the Mac- replace the current optical drive- thanks Apple for being so stingy with drive bays- VPC should have no problem recognizing the drive from the IDE chain, and should then be able to apply the firmware update.

You could purchase a FireWire PC Card, and use it in a friend's PC laptop. That is what I did. I also let him borrow the setup to burn CD's, so he split the cost of the FireWire PC Card with me.
