Hi,

Could somebody tell me if it's OK to go running/jogging with the iPod? I know the Apple FAQ says that you can, but I am a bit worried as I would be using it on a regular basis down the gym. (I'd rather get the iPod than the Rio)I've been told that anything with a hard drive will probably not take too kindly to lots of movement.

Any iPod users out there confirm if they've been using it when pounding the streets/down the gym?

Thanks

Yes you can take it jogging, the iPod has 32MB of RAM in it that will load songs from the HD onto it every time so that the iPod hd rarely needs to move. I believe it's 20 minutes or so worth of skip protection. I guess that depends on the quality of your songs as well.

I think you're referring to long-time sustained use....

I have the original Creative Nomad MP3 player. 32 in, 32 ext.

bought 99
now 01

jogged with it for 2 years now and works fine. outside...not so great. internally....fine. windows software.....terrrible. So constant movement really did nothing to my mp3 player for many years.

By the way, in comparison with that to the ipod, i always felt that my nomad was really good (and still is), but my ipod makes it look stupid.

Ya but the 6GB nomad is $169.00...

I also am concerned with this issue. I've read that a HD has a needle that hangs just nanometers from the HD surface to read data...thus abrupt movements could cause the needle to move..or worse tap the surface of the HD...erasing the data where it it taps.

And even if its ok jogging...you could still drop it

If I ever owned one, I wouldn't take a take it with me to jog. Wish I got money to burn to shell out as much as 400$ on a MP3 player and not to care if I damage it while joggin. With all the style and functionality(firewire connection...) the iPod offers, I still can't justify its price... even for the Christmas shopping. It's unfortunate that portability comes that expensive. Hope Apple will be mo' generous.

Does the iPod have a "hardened" drive like those fail-safe laptops? You know, the ones you can throw down a flight of stairs and they keep on chugging.

Dropped mine on a tile floor from about 3 feet today (I was leaning over with it in my shirt pocket). Aside from a nick in the right lower corner, it sustained no apparent damage.

I sure will be glad when someone designs a good case.

OK, thanks guys. As much as I would like to get the iPod, I think it maybe best to go with one of the non-moving part models like the Rio or Intel.

Perhaps look at getting the iPod next year and just use the Rio for jogging with.

I don't get it. You got almost all positive, definitive responses, and decide to ignore them all and (possibly) get a product from a company (Intel), that has exited the market and is not even making MP3 players any longer.

Check out c|net's review from today.

Apple's iPod site discusses how it's great even for an active person and suggests biking with it and stuff. If they say that, I don't see a problem? I walk fast and jump up and down three flights of stairs to my apartment everyday with mine and no problems...

From the iPod datasheet:
http://a1072.g.akamai.net/7/1072/51/.../iPod_DS-a.pdf

"iPod provides up to 20 minutes of continuous skip protection so you can run, mountain bike, or climb rocks without missing a beat of your favorite songs."

Yes, they were all positive and that's great. Nobody said though that they've been using it every day to jog with over the past few weeks.

This thing only comes with a 3 months warranty don't forget. What happens in 4 or 5 months time when the iPod no longer works due to too much activity?

I'm spending $400 on an MP3 player - I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing.
