Currently, I've got a USBGear, 20 GB, USB, external hard drive. After about an 2 hours of use I receive a "Hard Drive Error" and I'm unable to read or write without the error. The only solution is restarting the computer and leaving the external drive off for about 30 minutes.
This obviously seems like a heat problem. The fan in the drive runs continuously and the exhaust vent is clear of obstructions. The unit is about 1.5 years old and beyond warranty.
My solution has been to turn on the hard drive, transfer information to the internal HD desktop, shut off the external while I do work on the files, then tun on the external HD, and transfer them back.
Does anyone have any recommendations on:
a) a magical fix to the drive's problem
or
b) recommendations on reasonably priced, external HD's that are reliable above all.
Thanks,
- Chad
