Okay, call me crazy, but I just got a new 17" flat panel, installed the software from the CD, and I can't find a brightness control anywhere. This is what I get when I open "Monitors" control panel...

Is it perhaps one of those F-Key shortcuts? RTFM?

It's actually quite cool in OSX. There's a brightness icon on the face of the monitor, and when you "press" it, though it's not exactly a button, more of an "area," if that makes sense, the monitors preference window automatically opens. There's a brightness slider in there.

But that screenshot is in OS 9.2. Can any other 17" lcd users confirm the lack of a brightness toggle?

And no, there isn't a function key -- this is on my G4 tower. The keyboard doesn't have those buttons.

Although I'm totally unfamiliar with the LCD displays, is there something in the control strip?

O,

I have a 17" panel also and when I go to monitors I have a "color" button to the right of "Monitor" and a brightness control below. When I do "about" it's version 8.6.1. What version do you have? I'm on OS 9.1 also on a G4 tower (dual 450s I think).

Maybe a software update would get a newer version of monitors?

I don't know what kind of keyboard you have, but every Apple keyboard has F-Keys, the top row on the keyboard.

On powerbooks these are used for things like brightness, you might have to try them in combination with the command key.

Mine says 8.6.3.

How weird. My control panel is newer, but doesn't have those options. There SHOULD be a colors button there (or at least I thought so).

And yes, my keyboard is an Apple Pro Keyboard so it has function keys -- just not a brightness option like on my iBook keyboard.
