Just connect it. iTunes has all the drivers for the Rio 600.

I got a great deal on two Rio 300s, and after a little searching for the fancy interface cable, I actually got them both to work with my PC (the interface starts with a parallel printer port...). However, these little boxes max out at 64MB (IF you can find 32MB cards-they won't even see anything larger), so this was unsatisfactory for just about any usage...which led me to getting a pair of Photo iPods. I'm MUCH happier with them!

Short and sweet: if the Rio 600 is all you have, iTunes will help you out (though you'll probably have to make sure all the songs are in MP3 format), but I think you'll start yearning for a player with more capacity and a better user interface pretty soon.

I think that Apple basically put in support for all the major MP3 players released before the iPod. I don't know whether it'll work with newer ones.

Of course, most newer MP3 players don't need special drivers any more: they just show up on the desktop and you can drag MP3 files over to it.

uumm, thanks, but i have an iPod i just wanted to use my old rio for snowboarding so i didn't need to worry about breaking my ipod. And mp3 format won't work on my Rio 600, so far all the songs i put on are all in mpeg format.

P.S. if anyone knows a good (free too ) .aac to .mpeg converter please let me know, thanks again.

FYI: MP3s are MPEGs. MP3 is short for "MPEG-1, Layer 3." I would bet that your Rio 600 is in fact playing MP3s, and not some other type of MPEG.

SpaceMonkey is right. Here's the manual for th Rio 600-it supports MP3 and WMA files. MP3=good. WMA=problems.

The new creative players don't even support mass storage so you have to install drivers. Retarded.

Well, i took the AAC formated song i wanted to put in and "converted selection to mp3", and yes there was enough space, but when i hover over it with that newly formated song it won't let me put it into my Rio....

It's probably either too big or encoded at too high a bitrate for the Rio to work with. My Rio 300 doesn't seem to support anything higher than 64kbps encoding, and it supports exactly the same amount of Smart Media storage as your Rio 600.

In the iTunes options for transcoding there's an option for MP3 bitrate. You use the "Import" function to transcode, so go to Preferences, click on Advanced, and select the Import tab. It's all there, including bitrate, but it looks like the lowest it will do is 128kbps...

FYI, I've used high-bitrate and VBR MP3s on my Rio 600 with no problems.
