Is it me, or are there any HD's that don't have a high-pitched whine?

I am frustrated. When I received my 400mhz imac dvse in the Fall of 1999, the hard drive was a little loud. Since this was a known problem, I took it in to my local Apple service provider, and they replaced it with another 13GB drive, that was slightly quieter.
Unfortunately, I soon ran out of room with my video editing, and bought a Maxtor 40GB drive. I thought this drive was very loud, sort of a high-pitched whine when ever the HD was spinning, which was 99% of the time.
Since Maxtor has a pretty good exchange policy, I returned it directly to them, and for my inconvenience, they actually shipped me a 60GB drive. I was pretty happy with that, except for this drive, too, has a high pitched whine.
Is it me? Do HD's on imac's seem loud because it is an all-in-one unit, and it has no fan?
Or can I possibly find a HD that will not hurt my ears?

Greetings,
I too, belong to the noisy Maxtor drive owners club. I bought this 7200rpm drive earlier this year. It was barely audible when it was new, but has developed a high pitched whine. It's still extremely quiet when reading or writing but I'll have to start wearing earplugs if the whine gets any worse.
Before I replaced the stock western Digital drive, it had also developed a whine.
It's strange - I have old Macs with 20-500MB drives that, while noisy during reads and writes, are otherwise quiet.
Anyone know of any drives that stay quiet?
BTW, I have a G3 so it's not an iMac related problem.

My Quantum FireBall LM Pro 10 gig 7200 rpm drive has no whine. Makes noise when reading/writing, but thats only natural...

Both of my Western Digital Caviar 34000 4 gig 5200 rpm drives are the same. Quiet except when reading/writing - no whine.

The 18 gig SCSI Seagate is also very quiet, even when reading and writing, though the external enclosure might dampen whatever sound it makes fairly substantially.

It sure does. I have the same Maxtor Hard Drive in my Tower and because of the thick case and loud fan I can't hear the Hard drive whine.

On the other hand in my dead silent G4 Cube you can hear the Maxtor whine very well.

Funny, I replaced my old 20GB Maxtor drive (which was loud as hell) with a new 40GB Maxtor drive... The new one is VERY silent, almost scary... So I wouldn't blame Maxtor...
