Any recommendations? I'm going to be returning my Z520a to Cingular as it is buggy as hell--the phone keeps crashing and I never could get it to dial into my SBC account (it would return no carrier as soon as it dialed).
Being able to dial-up remotely over the phone is important to me when I travel, but I don't travel enough to make buying a data plan a good use of money (about 80,000 miles a year).

OK, if anyone was wondering, the Z520a works fine with many of the Sony scripts. I didn't have RAS on my cell phone account. :-|

Have you considered the Motorola RAZR? Not sure what type of phone you need.

I have a RAZR and Cingular and I connect easily through bluetooth. You'd have to pay for usage, they have a few plans.
There are faster options though, the RAZR (even the new V3i) are not the highest speeds (EDGE, etc) available.

Yeah, I don't travel enough to pay a lot for real data plans.
The RAZR looks like it would break easily (Amazon has a customer picture of a broken RAZR). Any thoughts on that?

Is it even possible to use your cell phone as a dial up modem? I thought that type of usage was blocked, hence requiring subscription to a data plan.
A good resource for info on cell phones is howard forums. I learned how to tether my Nokia 6230 to my Mac + thinkPad from that website. It was a painful process bec. a lot of 6230's were defective. After exchanging my 6230 for another everything has been great. I have the unlimited media net plan, cingular would probably prefer i didn't tether but i do not get charged for data use.

Yes it is possible. Cingular charges $3.99/mo for it, but it steals out of the voice minutes. A lot better for my purposes than a $20/mo plan for 5 MB.
It is quite slow, but sufficient for what I need.

I'd say I provide better care for my V3 than I have for previous phones.. My last phone was a Sanyo MM7400, it had rubberized ext. and whatnot. If it rumbled around in the world I cared less.
That said, my V3 is pretty damn tough. I just try to make sure not to put it in harm's way too often.
Oh, and data plans(current ones) are too expensive for what they provide.
