I have had a LaCie firewire drive for a few years now. It is 120GB and has been very reliable. I use it for back up and extra files and it is partitioned into two drives. I have even used it as a startup drive and worked off it when my Powerbook went in for repair a few months ago.

Here is the problem. I had files on my non-backup portion of the drive and was having trouble copying them off. I ended up just reformatting the whole drive after I salvaged most of the files.

So after reformatting, I partition it like before and back up my Powerbook. The next morning, I boot up and the firewire drive sounds like it is constantly reading. Kinda in a loop...read..spin..read..spin. It sounded like Spotlight was indexing it, but there was no indication of this.

I have now reformatted it again with no partitions. I copied about 30GB on to it and so far it is working like a champ.

My question is 'can or should I trust it?' I don't think anything is wrong with it physically. I cracked open the case and it seems that I can simply replace the drive (which I didn't realize I could do). So should I just toss a new HD in it or do you think I can trust it as is??

Thanks!

Download SMARTReporter (VersionTracker has it) and see what the S.M.A.R.T. parameters say... it may be failing or it may be fine.
