Hey folks,

I recently bought a Dual Core 2.3ghz system. The reason I bought it was for video editing with Final Cut Pro...and I wanted one ^_^. I've used a 20" iMac with FCP and it was almost heaven. I've been eyeing the 23/20" ACDs and the 24/20" Dell LCDs. Apparently, the 20" iMac, 20" ACD, and 20" Dell share the same LCD, just different cathode tubes, etc. If I went with the 20" LCD, I would buy two. If I got either the 23" or 24", I'd be fine with just one. I hear that people have issues with the 24" Dell and Final Cut Pro. I wonder if it is visual tearing, or if it's something along the lines of FCP telling you that frames are dropping (seen that happen on the iMac). Maybe Final Cut Pro has v-sync? *shrug* ...I'm wondering if 20" Dell would have the same problem. And if it does, wouldn't the 20" iMac and 20" ACD have the same problem as well?

One thing I noticed with most Apple forums is that people can be very vague in answering questions. It's like everyone is just happy to have a Mac and want to greet you with a hug (just kidding).

The 24" and 20" Dells are on sale again and here I am, on the fence... hrmmmm

Apple has an article on it. Barefeats reports:
January 9th, 2006 (Updated) -- FCP PLAYBACK PROBLEM REPORTED
Readers have reported to me a problem with skipped frames during playback with Final Cut Pro using the Dell LCD 2405FPW display at 60Hz. Apple warns about problems with 60Hz refresh rate in an article on their web site, but that applies to CRTs. Most readers report NO problems with the Dell 2405FPW. We can't duplicate the problem in our lab. Apple recommends refresh rates of 75Hz or higher. The Quad-Core with the FX 4500 connected to the Dell 2405FPW can be set to 75Hz at 1024x768 or 1280x1024 resolution. The native 1920x1200 only can run at 60Hz on the Dell. It's unknown what scan rate the Cinema displays use. If you open the Displays preference panel, refresh rate is "n/a."

I have a feeling it depends on your video card and Apple may be able to fix it with a future update to FCP.

Dell may use different electronics with the same panel since they have so many more input options; I'm not sure if they use the same electronics for DVI and additional electronics for the other inputs, or a completely different electronics package.

I have seen review saying the Dell's picture isn't quite as good.
