Will Apple have to start selling its LCDs cheaper in order to compete with these? The Apple 15-incher goes for $600, this one goes for $350! If larger LCD displays start being sold by rival companies on the cheap, I hope Apple further rreduces its large-display prices. Hmm, a Cinema Display all for me....

Well, the article says very clearly that it's missing a case, power supply and cable. So you have to add in the price of that, plus assembling the whole thing, than outrageous markup...then what's the price? But if you wanted to buy your own partial LCD screen and finish it yourself, I guess it's cheaper.

That is 350 for the display, not the display in the case, if I read the article correctly. The 600 for apple includes the case and cabling and such.

Ooops. I just saw the $350 price and skipped the rest. The spirit of the question remains.

No, you can get 15-inch LCD panels for as cheap as $329 these days. That includes the cabling, display... everything.
If you need help locating a cheap 15-incher, drop me a line.

Radius, now a division of KDS, sells an excellent (I've read the rave review on c|net, looked at the specs, and actually seen a perfect one) 15-inch display with only 25 milliseconds of latency (normal displays have 40-60 milliseconds of latency, CRT's have about 17-20) for $379 not including the $50 rebate. Fry's Electronics sells them consistantly for less than $400.

Good question, though I would point out that the Apple display has digital connector and most of the cheap LCD's have analog connectors. I really don't claim that this makes any difference, but in the Digital connector LCD shootout on MacWorld, not only did the apple 15" lcd score great compared to the other monitors, it was the cheapest! The only con was that it had a proprietary ADC connector, which is actually kinda nice if you own a new Powermac....
