I've been thinking of getting a 17" LCD for a while now. Part of the reason I still haven't decided on it is that I'm unsure about the effect of pixel response time. I've seen the 17" Studio Display, and the picture is impressive, but the machine at the store didn't have any suitable material for testing how well it does with fast-moving video.

I do mostly motion graphics and video work, so this is an important issue for me (although I'm not a high-end purist - if it looks good enough for most people, it's probably good enough for me).

So, I'd like to hear from anyone out there who has the 17" LCD, and has been using it for editing video or just watching DVD's. Does it have visible ghosting or other artifacts? The color reproduction seems very good with photos, but does it hold up in motion? (I've seen some LCD's where the color gets very mushy as soon as things start moving, I guess it's just an additional artifact caused by ghosting)

Thanks for your time!

Pauli...

I wish I could help you with direct experience on an Apple 17" LCD, but I've only seen them in the stores and thought they were great. However, after reading several reviews, including in Macworld 2-3 months ago, I decided to buy a Formac Gallery 1740 LCD monitor. It is the only LCD that I would recommend over the Apple display. It is slightly larger, (17.4") and handles movement with less ghosting problems. It also comes in a version with Colorvision software and a Pantone Spyder sensor for color calibration specifically made for the Formac. Since I do color work I got that model. I use it along with a calibrated CRT, but I use the Formac as the main display because it is sharper.

Running action movies on DVD through it is a pleasure. No LCD that I know of yet is completely free of ghosting, but it is not a perceptible problem to my eyes.

Anyway, I hope you get some responses from Apple Display owners, too, but do check out the Formac. (Their website makes some pretty strong claims that I feel are backed up by the product.)

Good luck!

careca,
thanks a lot for the information!

Actually I have been looking at the Gallery as an alternative, but no store in my region keeps it in stock and I'm hesitant to buy something without seeing it first. Especially as it's kind of hard to determine from the pictures what the Gallery really looks like, and some of the reviews I've seen mention the flimsy construction of the frame, which worries me.

How do you like the design? It seems kind of odd in the pictures, with those big round "ears"... If you have any photos of how it actually looks next to a G4, I'd love to see that

Trying that out on a cinema display, I can ALMOST confirm that these things do indeed keep consistent color when moving an object
In a realm beyond site, the sky shines gold, not blue, there the Triforce's might makes mortal dreams come true.

Hmm, I don't like the sound of that "almost"
