I was wondering if CompactFlash/Smartmedia/SD/MMC media mounted on the desktop (in 9 and X) like a floppy disk and if you could read and write to them like you can a floppy.

I'm looking for an easy way to save documents from Office straight to a disk (mem card). I'm tired of saving it and copying it to a CD.

I was thinking of getting the Kodak multi-card reader http://www.kodak.com/US/en/corp/stor...l?PRODID=21220

If anyone has a better sugestion please tell me. Should I go for a FireWire one? Which type of memory card (Compact Flash/SMARTMEDIA/SD/MMC) do you think is best/fastest/most reliable or the dominent standard? Will a memory card reader (over USB/FireWire) be much faster than a USB floppy (they are so slow)?

Sounds like a good idea. I've got a SanDisk CF usb drive; it works like a standard 9/X volume, and it certainly seems faster than a floppy.
I'd value a multi-card feature before firewire, unless a firewire option wouldn't add much to the cost.

A single card firewire reader is $10 more than the quad card usb reader.

Have you had any problems with lost data on the CompactFlash cards?

I'd rather get a drive and then buy the memory cards sence a 128MB card can be had for under $50 and a 128MB Disgo is £140. Even factoring in $40 for the drive it's still $50 cheaper (assuming pound for dollar). If anyone can find these for less money I would love to hear about it. I like that they don't need drivers. Does anyone know if the card readers need drivers?

My drive is supported by X.1 natively, and is usable under 9.2 without installing the drivers. It takes about 6s to transfer a floppy sized file, and about 6m to fill the card (128MB). No problems with data loss so far.

Following are some speed comparisons: http://www.dpreview.com/articles/mediacompare/ http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/unit...ader/page2.asp
