I just bought a PC Radeon 8500 DDR 64MB video card off of ebay for $229, shipping included. I know that these cards are selling for less, but this way I have a card that I know will work. Also I don't have any way to flash a card myself even if I wanted to try it. So, did I get hosed on the price?

There aren't many PC Radeon 8500 64MB for sale in stores anymore. If you're lucky to find it on sale, it can go as low as $130 during clearance from Best Buy according to another member. My guess is that you payed ~$50 more for getting it flashed.

The reason that I was willing to pay $229 was that I have no way to flash the card myself. I've have heard that only the early models of 64mb pc radeons can even be flashed, most of them are gone as you said. The lowest price I've seen for the mac version of the card is $267 at MacMall and that price does't include shipping. So if you look at it that way, I saved myself some money. I got the card this morning and it works great, just like the legit Mac version that costs more. I'm happy!

well, congrats on your new card. I'll be getting one of those myself but I'll hold out as long as possible (ie when I get a copy of 10.2) in hope that prices will go down a bit. Maybe I'll be lucky and the more people will successfully flash a 128MB Radeon 8500 and it'll be ~$150 (unflashed) by then. I don't play any games since I can't afford them right now, so it's worth putting it off for now.

Actually, you did have a way to flash the card.
You:
(1) drop the firmware file into the startup items folder in OS9.
(2) reboot with the Radeon in the AGP slot.
(3) wait a few minutes and shut the computer down.
(4) then reboot again and it should work.
You did pay too much - I just paid $148 for one ($12 for shipping). Don't feel too bad though
since if it works, you at least got it going for less than you'd pay for the Mac edition of the card.
So, maybe there's value in not hassling with the thing. Me, I tend to get my hands dirty when
dealing with hardware so....
