I've been an owner of a Nikon Coolscan 4000 for less than 3 weeks now. It's my first film scanner and learning to use it has been an OK experience so far. To other owners of LS 4000, I would like to know:

1) Have you ever scanned a fairly high contrast negative image (I scan a few black & white films), only to have an image that is very distorted?

2) Are you still using Nikon's software to run the scanner, or have you replaced it with someting else (like "Vuescan" from Hamrick Software)?

3) I have the scanner attached to a heavily upgraded Power Center Pro with a G3 500 processor & 512 megs of RAM. I'm thinking that the 5-year old computer is finally showing its age since it takes 16 minutes to scan a color neg image at full 4000 dpi with Digital ROC & ICE enabled. How long does it take your computer to scan with the same settings?

Thanks in advance for your reponses.

Eric

I notice no one has responded to you post - you might have better luck in the forums over at http://www.popphoto.com

I don't have a CS4000, but I would like one, and am interested in the answers to your questions...

Orion... I took your suggestion, went over to popphoto.com, and even signed up in their forum. However, I found this thread (http://www.popphoto.com/ubb/ultimate.php?ubb=get_topic&f=4&t=000411) and one of the links featured there should have some answers.

As for my previous questions:

1) I fixed my distorted image by playing with the contrast control of the scanner software.

2) I downloaded the Vuescan Software but I haven't tried it yet.

3) The computer is slow, but it's OK if I don't use the Digital ROC & GEM while scanning negs.

I purchased the Coolscan here in Tokyo (I'm a U.S. Military member stationed in Yokosuka, Japan) and simply downloaded the english language version of the software from the Nikon Website. Although I lost the 1 year warranty support, I did save perhaps $250-$300 compared to the U.S. mail order price.

But above all, the scanner seems to work great on my old negatives.

Thanks!

Eric
