Hey people - I've had a terrible two weeks - it has strained my self-confidence in my Mac skills...
I was asked by a good friend to build him a firewire hard drive for his upgraded 8500 (233mhz Sonnet G3). He has an OrangeMicro fire/usb PCI card which so far has been working fine for USB, but when I introduce 1394 to the equation, everything gets hosed. The drive I put together is a Macally case (of which I own several and have had no problems with) with an IBM Deskstar 75GXP UltraATA/100 60Gb drive contained therein. My problem is as follows:
Copying data TO the drive is no problem. No errors. It's when I try to copy data off the drive or even play a large movie file (Lord of the Rings) that it freezes. The firewire bus seems to crash - I have to force-quit QT player or Finder (if I'm copying files) and if I get back to Finder after that, the bus is *gone*.
The interesting thing is that if I play small movies or copy small files, everything is peachy. The firewire bus seems to overload the machine and kill it. I tried everything from all different versions of the drivers for the card, the drive, firewire installs from apple, even going to OS 9.1 for a few hours, moving the PCI card from slot to slot... all to no avail. I've had zero response from either Macally or OrangeMicro in a week, I'm going to call tuesday and raise hell, but I wanted to put the question out to the larger audience...
so...
power users - any ideas? I do computing support for a large university department, so I'm not a novice, but this has me stumped.
