Just on the verge of buying a new iBook and the Airport kit. However, I keep finding threads from people who say they are unable to use FTP progs to upload with Airport. Some have even mentioned that they have difficulty sending larger email attachments!

I have searched for a definative answer, but I am still not sure if it is some kind of hardware/firewall issue or people just not setting up their network correctly.

Can anyone, without being to technical, shed some light?

For your info... I want to set up my old (non Airport) Powermac G4 400 together with the iBook and Airport connected to a Motorola cable modem (ISP. BlueYonder in the UK). Most used FTP....Transmit.

Appreciate your help.

I can only speak from experience. I've done uploads and downloads via ftp over airport to my powerbook. it worked fine. however, I configured airport for ethernet bridging, since I didn't need to create a local network (I only have this one mac).

I used os x's ftp option to run an ftp server for my brother. again, my powerbook was running the ftp over the airport (ethernet bridging) and it worked fine.

emailing large attachments (9+ MB) also works fine for me. bridging may not be an option for you, so ymmv.
