Ive had many different drives/cd's/firewire HD over the years from LaCie and most recently the 30GB firewire HD when thatone first came out and it is superb. I got it for my father.
they have a new 40GB firewire HD but its not at MacConnection etc until the 2d week of March. the due date keeps getting pushed back. I don't know if its a manufaturing problem or what.
LaCie's support/service has been excellent in the past, but am getting impatient.

WesternDigital makes a 45GB firewire that available now, and sl chceaper then the LaCie, but I don't know about their reputation, support etc.
Does anybody have the WD 45gb HD? Views on the two companies? thanks

I was considering either a La Cie or a Western Digital but I ended up buying a 45GB external FW off of eBay for about $250. The drive itself is an IBM 7200/rpm and it works great. Check out madlogix.com if you're interested.

I believe that Lacie's prices have gone down huge over the past months, and that the delay involves switching from IBM drives to 7200RPM maxtors - lower quality. I too am trying to get my hands on one, but finding that backorder problem. Was one week a week ago, now it's two weeks. My impatience meant that I wound up upgrading my Pismo's Internal HDD, but I still want one soon. Check Accelerate your Mac's Drive Compatibility database - the one complaint I heard a lot was "noisy" but this is a fan problem, not a drive problem, and I have a Lacie CD-writer, which is not too loud. The bouns is the casing, which is really nice looking and stackable. I do see that some company from Florida is selling some on eBay, though, so who knows what the problem might be. But up in Canada, these Lacie drives are cheaper than the supposed to be the cheapest Maxtor drives (with all the problems) so I'll wait. Unless somebody tells me something bad about them . . . (BTW, Lacie's support tells me the drives are now bootable, if anybody was concernd.)
