Anyone have an iMic?
Does it work.. I have heard that the sound quality is terrible?
Is it an issue or just operator error?
Is there better bang for the buck? All I need is a sound in port.
Thanks.

just got mine in yesterday.
i had a minijack to RCA cable running from the minijack audio out on my powermac to an input on my stereo and when i switched it to the imic it sounded better to me. i ripped a couple albums and they sound pretty good too.
for SURE you can find better, but USB audio is a pretty sturdy way to go. 35 bucks is hard to beat.

just bought it.. cant get it to work at all with my videocard.
it works fine when i run the sound from the videocard directly to the speakers... but when i run it from the videocard to the iMic i get nothing.
I assume it is operator error... I have been adjusting all the sound settings in OS9 but still no luck.
any advice?

Whoevertold you that they sound terrible is incorrect. There are some things you ought to know:
-The iMic is a 35 dollar USB audio input/output device. It is by no means of studio recording quality, but it is much better than any standard audio hardware that I've ever encountered on any computer, mostly because it is an external device and that eliminates a lot of electrical noise from the motherboard.
-It is capable of 24 bit recording if you buy ASIO drivers from a site like usbaudio.com. However, AFAIK, these don't work with OSX yet.
-With any OS <9.2.2 and so far every release of OSX, there is a USB power feadback issue in some 2001 iBooks that causes frequency gliches in the audio.
So, chances are that it will sound anything but terrible for you, unless you have certain iBooks; I don't know if this problem was solved in more recent models. And if you do, just use OS9, although it's a pain, for now.
I would suggest that you get one. They're a steal for the price.

i have the imic, and it works o.k. (signal goes in/out), but i have a consistent problem with setting the line levels in it's control panel (os9). can't get the line levels to work at all, buggy control panel.

It worked fine for me, but I haven't tested since getting OS X.1.5. There is a thread somewhere (OS X General?) about kernel panics with it in X.1.5.

I bought an imic with the intention of using it to record some of my audiobooks to mp3's so that I could listen to them on my mp3 player when I run & bike. I got the unit, plugged it in & started recording (using the included Final Vinyl software). The resulting file is HUGE! a 15 minute sample is about 500 MB. My Nike PSA player only has 128 Megs of ram.
The problem appears to be that the files are recorded at 44100.00 HZ in Final Vinyl. If I take one of my CD Audiobooks & rip it to itunes, the files are like 2 or 3 megs for a 15 minutes segment. I've tried taking the Final Vinyl clips & importing them into itunes, but they remain the same size.
Any ideas on how to get these file sizes down?

The iMic works fine for me, but since the last os update to 10.2.6, it sometimes disappears from the sound control panel. i never had the problem before. works great with the tv-card too.

Try dragging the 500mb file into the iTunes Library. Then go to the 'advanced' menu and select 'convert to mp3'. Should do the trick. Just make sure you then delete the original, not the MP3!
