Are there anyone who have managed to put another IDE HD as "slave" on the internal ATA bus? Since it can be done on a PC, but there you would configure it in the setup, would it not be possible on the mac somehow?
I've tried it, but it seems like the "master" is blocking the "slave" on the same bus. Where is the limitation? Is it the IDE bus on the Mac?

I don't know about the beige G3's, but early B&W G3's could not accept a slave drive. The problem was with the motherboard, and was fixed in the second revision. You might want to check Apple's web site for the answers you seek.

Assuming that you can add a second hard drive as a slave, make sure you have the jumpers set correctly. For info on how to set the jumpers, see the web site for the HD manufacturer.

It is a logic board thing. In later revisions of the board, the IDE chip allowed slave drives. Go to www.xlr8yourmac.com I believe they have a post that tells you what to look for. As I recall, you can tell by the graphics chip on the board, but I don't remember the specifics.

Rumor has is OS X Beta has allowed people to do this even when the controller doesn't support it. We'll have to see what the final release allows. Outside of that, the only other way is to add an IDE card to the machine. VST and Sonnet make some that are supposed to be pretty good.
