B&W 350mhz read fast CD-RW?

I was told that my B&W 350mhz Powermac might not be able to utilize fast CD-RW drives such as 24, 32, or 40. I was looking at the LaCie (faster speeds) vs Smartdisk which is only 8x8x24 and I read that the 16x is not compatible with OS 9. Can anyone shed light on this?
