I am looking to buy a new monitor for the new G4 model. I noticed that some 3rd party monitors are cheaper when compared to mac monitors in the same size. I saw a Sony CPD-G400 19" for the same amount as the Apple 17" display. Why is this...? what is more convinient and what does the Apple 17 have that the sony 19" doesn't? and of course... what are your recomendations... I guess that for the difference of money I would even try to get the Sony CPD G500 21" that retails for less than $900...
Thanks...

Get the 21" Sony.
The only difference is Apple ones look better really.
The ASD even has a Sony Trinitron CRT... or mine does. Dunno 'bout the new ones.
Apple charges a premium on monitors, just like they do on RAM.
Get the Sony.

When Apple moved to the B&W and later graphite monitors, I believe they switched to Mitsubishi tubes for a while, but I think that changed somewhere during it's production life. With the new clear monitor, I don't know which tube they are using. The Sony tubes were in older AppleVision and ColorSync versions of their monitors for sure. With the new ones, the only difference I ever noticed was they casing. Apple definitely seems to be charging a premium for displays that match the computer style.

As far as what monitor to get, I suggest no less than a 19". I got a Hitachi for $330. It isn't the highest end, isn't flat screen, but it was what I could afford. I'm really happy with it. I wish I could have afforded a 21". I do a lot of Photoshop and Adobe Premiere work. The larger space is tremendously convenient.

don't get the sony... YET.

They're coming out with new models.. G400 is becoming G420, likewise for other models.

I would suggest the 21" Sony whenever you decide to buy it. If you don't go with the sony, at least get one that is 'flat'. Viewsonic makes some nice monitors as well (their Perfect Flat Series aren't too shabby).

Anyway, just remember that the monitor is the part of your computer set up that you look at the most.

[it didn't make too much sense the first time.]
