I went to my local apple store on saturday with my iPod which wasn't correctly holding the charge. This is out of warranty since it was one of the original ones. He told me all iPods now have an "extended warranty" which is not advertised to a year and replaced it in the store for free.

Which store did you got to ? My iPod has the same problem, in addition to the cracked earphone jack, and I didn't feel like spending $200 for a repair.

I'm trying to buy some dead iPods to examine the components. I'd like to find and "publish" the info on it. Like if the drive isn't dead, copy all of the boot data, if there is any, and put it up or work on flash rom stuff.
Thanks,

Hmmm...interesting. I suppose this is kind of inevitable. I'm not sure what the situation is in the USA, but a year's warranty is standard in Europe, due to EU regulations, and in other countries there are often some sort of consumer protection laws stating that the item must function for a 'reasonable' amount of time (ie. usually a year). Any manufacturers warranty is in addition to this, and cannot override it, so when it comes to the crunch, I imagine Apple would be forced to concede over its 3 month warranty.

I'm curious what kind of problems that you have with your iPod. Mine would jump from song to song in a playlist without playing the song. If there were 43 songs it would run from 1-43 listing each song but not playing it. Then it would freeze when I hit menu. Finally, I took it back to the store and the guy said to reformat it. It played fine for a few days...then it would play the music but skip through the entire song. The battery only had an hour or so on a new charge. I plugged it in that night and next day it plays fine again. Go figure.

what ive had is that no matter how long i charge it, the most i can get out of it is between 1-3 hours. never more than 3. and it wont work if i charge it from the computer itself, but only while its PLAYING while plugged into the wall. if i unplug it and THEN turn it on, it will only last a few minutes. really strange...
it took me awhile to figure out the lil quirks like this. btw, it worked fine fer the first 4-5 months of playing almost constantly, but then just started doing what i described one day and was like that ever since...

I took my IPOD into the Apple store today (well technically yesterday) to have it fixed. A black spot developed on the screen and the IPOD no longer charged or mounted. I thought I would have to fight to get it fix being that the screen looked like a user-inflicted problem, but I was wrong. The Mac genius took a look at it and said there was no way I caused the problem and that something must have broken or overheated inside the unit. He wrote up a report without any in depth questions about it. Unfortunately their replacement IPODS where out of stock so I have to go back to get my replacement unit, but I was glad to see the prompt service they provided me.
BTW I only brought in the IPOD and charger/fire wire cable. They did not ask for receipt and I only need to give them the IPOD when I exchange it for a working unit

Apple finally realised that a 90 day warrenty on a £430 device was a mistake.
Thank god!

You don't need a reciept for at least till the first anniversary of the ipod's launch. They won't ask for one when it's obvious the product isn't a year old yet.

To answer your questions I just walked in, he punched in the serial # the computer. He didn't need any reciepts or anything its all in their database. I filed out a couple of forms for apple care and he gave me the new iPod. This was at the North Shore Mall in Peabody, MA. He said most stores have them on hand to swap. Glad to have a brand new iPod.

Dyou think that they will allow us to upgrade to the 10 gig size if we bring back our damaged 5 gig original iPod and a 100 bucks? I got my iPod on Nov 10 I belive the day it was released and the ring around the headphone jack broke and there is sometimes static, so I am thinking of bringing it back.

Went to the Apple store. Warranty is only three months, the Apple genius was of no help whatsoever. The original poster was wither very lucky, or my Apple genius was an ignorant idiot, or the original poster is a liar (or living in Europe where warranty is 12 months.)
