I have planned to replace my blue&white G3 by a cube 500 with a new monitor. I am dreaming of the 15" flat panel BUT I am not sure that this would be the best choice. Maybe you can help me ? My activities are (1) video editing (iMovie/Final Cut), (2)internet surfing (3)games (4)...
1) Is the flat-panel viewable area as big as the one on the 17" ?
2) I saw on a Powerbook that some colors (light grey i.e.) are just not viewable. Will it be the same on a 15" ?
3) What about playing games with that monitor ? (colors, nuances, ...)
4) Is the 15" reliable ? I read many comments on cnet that says there are often technical problems after a few months ... ?

Thanks for your comments !!

well, chief the viewable area on most 15" displays is around 13.5", you'd be giving up quite a bit of monitor space with a flat panel. Unless you have the cash for a larger lcd (cinema display) you'd be downgrading your monitor choice.

I'd say to go flat panel. Take a gander at the Samsung SyncMaster 770 TFT. That's what I got and I love it. My Dad who has a 20" CRT for his Dell desktop (he's dead to me) has a major case of monitor envy. Go with a quallity 17" LCD and you won't be disappointed. Of course Apple just reduced the price of the 22" Cinema Display.....

Wetsponge: Flat panel display measurements are true viewing areas. 15" is 15", no less.

Skypat: Most 17" tube monitors have a 16" viewable area, so you'll lose 1 inch of diagonal space.

I have never used Apple's 15" flat panel so I can't answer any of your other questions.
