Call customer service and say you are going overseas for a week or two and you were wondering if you can use your phone with a sim card from that region... They'll hopefully send you to a specific department that does "unlocking."

Are you speaking hypothetically or from experience?

The last time I asked Cingular on the phone, they said outright that it was out of the question. So did the Cingular stores, except one, where an employee gave me the number of a "friend" who does unlocks.

I don't have Cingular, but I have a friend who works at a Customer Service call center..and another that is a manager at a Cingular brand store. The CSR said they have a department that does the unlocks for international use. Also, it was said in a thread on www.howardforums.com.

I've asked them about unlocking the phone before going to another country (I really was) and they said sure we can so it for $20. I said c'mon I've been with cingular for many years and I'm not paying $20 to have my 2.5 year old phone unlocked just so I can pay another $20 in a few months when I get a new phone. I ended up only unlocking my t-mobile phone since it's much easier and used that instead.

If you can, I would google some instructions, but don't try too many times or you will lock yourself out. Next option (assuming cingular wants to charge you) is to find some small store where you can pay the guy $5 to do it for you.

Here in Mexico is close to impossible to get that... I have a Sony Ericsson W600i and believe me, it was impossible to get the unlock code from Telcel, they told me "Sorry, I don't know what you are talking about"

Lots of posts on this at www.howardforums.com. I thought Cingular had an e-mail address that you could request your unlock code from, but that was a couple years ago. So glad I'm with T-Mobile. As long as you've been a customer for three months they'll unlock your phone, no questions asked.
