Hi,

I want to get a external firewire HD as a backup/storage for my PBG4. So far, this FireWire Mini HardDrive seems to be the best looking one (IMHO).

Please suggest your choice of FW HD. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have that case and like it very much. I have a 20gig IBM drive in it. If money were no object, I would probably get one of the new VST drives with the 1.8 inch Toshiba drives. I like the smaller size and lower power consumption.

Hello fellow AT member.

Anyways, www.owcomputing.com sells their drives with the same case for significantly cheaper.

It seems you saved me more than few times now (the biggest one is the J.C. Morris)

Now I noticed there are different controller chipsets for FireWire... Could anyone have link to comprehensive compare review?

Also, I'm planning to swap out my 20GB HD that came with my TiBook 550 model with 5400RPM drives... Any suggestions?

I have a new PB 800 and a buddy of mine has a rev B 667 PB. We both have problems using our external firewire drives (they are identical) both came from firewiredirect, both are 20 GB IBM, and both have the same enclosure FireXpress by CompuCable. Be sure to ask people who have had experience on your model Powerbook with a particular enclosure.

FREQUENT Problems we have had:

Failure to mount on desktop

unable to mount on startup (have to unplug the drive fin order for OSX to startup)

Reboot - same as above; stops the system from starting up until drive is unplugged

I used the same external on my iBook Dual USB and never had one singel problem.

A FireWire hard drive is not a PowerBook, nor a PowerBook-specific device... off to Peripherals this goes!

Dear Mr./Mrs./Ms. Moderator

I have had problems with external fire wire drives (with enclosures) using Powerbooks... I am not sure what the problem is, but I do think it is a PowerBook issue (at least with me)...
