I was thinking of upgrading my trusty Sawtooth (with upgraded processor) to a Dual Layer Superdrive. OWC sells one that's a pioneer 110D. I've read some people say that they don't need anything to run it... and some people say that they do.. Some people have to update frimware..

I tried updating the firmware from there site with a friends computer and I NEVER could get the update program to read the firmware patches that Xlr8yourmac sent me too. I'm not a big fan of that site anyway. Does anyone have an advice as to how to get a Dual Layer Internal drive that DOESN'T require drivers... DOESN'T require Toast? Will the Pioneer 110D work with OS 10.4 without anything (will it see it as an Apple device) or do I need to go to MCE tech and order mine there??? (They seem to claim that their devices are 100 percent compatible and OWC can't tell me if their's is or not)

Thanks for any input you can give.

The DVR-110D works in 10.4.4 without any patches or hacks; 10.3 (and possibly some earlier 10.4 releases) needed patchburn.

I'd buy from Newegg instead of OWC; Newegg has better prices and excellent customer service.
Newegg has the drive in black for $39 + $5 shipping or beige for $40 + $5 shipping.

ditto as what mduell has recommended. In addition, I'd put the burner in an external firewire case, so that you can use it with multiple computers and can easily take it with you when you get a newer Mac. (yes, you can always just take it back out of the sawtooth--but I do love firewire.)

So by hacks does that also include Firmware updates??? Some people say they get it and it registers 1.17 and that firmware is "flacky". So they update it to something better. Does the drive show in the Apple Profiler as Apple Supported/Shipped?

If you're interested, you can use a region free firmware with that drive too, and it's flashable on a Mac. Check out my post in this thread.

Dunno about dual-layer support for it in iDVD though. Haven't tried. Works fine in iTunes and for Finder burning though.
