Hello,
I have a really simple question: If I plug in a USB device to my powerbook and switch it on, should it show up in System Profiler even if my Mac has no drivers for it?
The reason why I ask is that I have a Pocket PC phone, and when I plug it in, it charges with the power over USB, but otherwise does not show up in any way. I thought that that was fine, but I've now installed some software on the phone which should emulate USB mass storage (and should work on my device), but still nothing.
Should I be worried that the USB is bust on the phone - or is it more likely to be just down to software?
Thanks,
David.

See if it works normally on a PC, if it does the usb port is fine (I'm sure it is).
Perhaps if you tell us which model it is people here that have it will provide their experiences with it.
Also, in system profiler hit command-r to refresh or find it under one of the menus.

Yes, good idea - It's a T-mobile MDA Vario (Also known variously as a HTC Wizard/O2 XDA Mini S/ Cingular 8125) - The thing is that it runs Windows Mobile 5.0, which does not work with the windows syncing programs, so at the moment the only thing I can do is remove the card and put it into a card reader.
The thing that worries me is that it might well not work with the PC either as the program should mimic USB mass storage, which works fine with both Mac and PC.

OK - Problem solved! For some totally unknown reason, the USB - miniUSB cable I was using, despite looking absolutely identical to the one supplied with the phone, fitting in both sockets, and charging the phone - is somehow different to the one supplied with the phone. Upon using this, everything works great!
Move on, Move on, nothing to see here...
David.
