Epson 1280. It's a six color printer, which does a great job at photo work. It is X compatible, and it sells for around $499.It will handle up to 13 x 19 paper.

If your time is worth money then have a look at the Canon S9000. About 5 times faster to print than the Epson.

With Epsons, if the print head gets blocked and the cleaning function doesn't help, you can throw the printer away Canon you just get a replacement head. Not cheap but cheaper than buying a whole new printer.

I second the recommendation for the Canon S9000. The Epson's print speed is unbearable in comparison; the S9000 is at least three times as fast (the larger the images, the faster it is in comparison). That said, the Epson's text quality may be slightly better on normal paper.

Thanks again all

I recommend the HP 1220. It's a very good printer.Very good print quality fast and also cheap. I was gonna by myself an epson printer but I'm thankful I haven't!!!! On Epson's if the printer heads dry up then you are screwed you have to replace the whole printer!!!! And believe me it happens very fast and very easily.I have friends with epson's and the only thing they have to say is bad things about them.2-3 weeks of not using the print will dry the heads and then you'll have to spend the big bucks....
On hp's you have to pay for the print heads every time you'll change your cartidges but on the long run it will be cheaper then epson's.....
Also they are dead slow.I mean SLOOOOOOWW!!!!! (What do you expect with 256K of RAM???) The ultra cheap HP printer comes with 512KB and all the others with 1 to 2 MB.
Also the draft mode on epson's is unusable. If you want a quick print then you will have to use the normal mode which is slower and for epson's standards double slower....
I don't know what printer you will choose but stay away from epson's....
I haven't used canons.OOnly HP's and Epson's.Between the 2 choose HP.No doubt about that.

iron,
MWave.com (a reliable vendor) offers the Canon S9000 for <a href="http://direct.mwave.com/mwave/ProdPTR-INK-CAN.hmx?UID=&CID=&updepts=PTR-INK&DNAME=%3Cb%3EPrinters%2DInkjet%3C%2Fb%3E&a mp;Back=ProdPTR-INK-CAN.hmx?" target="_blank">$419</a>. That's about the best price I have seen.
I understand that Canon intends to replace this printer with a new model (even faster? better quality?) in August. Epson recently announced the successor to its 2-year old Epson Stylus Photo 2000P last month; the Stylus 2100/2200 (2100 in UK, 2200 in US) is supposed to offer improved print quality (a little better than the Canon) with much improved speed (but still not quite up to the Canon). You can read previews right <a href="http://www.dp-now.com/news/Apr2002/dpnnews188/dpnnews188.html" target="_blank">right here (Dp-now.com)</a> and <a href="http://computers.cnet.com/hardware/0-2375165-404-9782487.html?tag=pdtl-list" target="_blank">right here (Cnet)</a>. It should sell for about $600 when it becomes available in July.

HP also announced their next-generation Deskjet printers on Monday. They are a significant improvement on the HP's current technology (which was rather obsolete compared to that offered by Canon and Epson). We'll have to wait for reviews to see just how significant the improvement is with the new HP printer models. It remains to be seen whether they will be competitive with the newest Canon and Epson models for photo printing.

Here's <a href="http://www.dp-now.com/news/Jun02/dpnnews211/dpnnews211.html" target="_blank">the link</a> for information on the new HP Deskjet 5550, Photosmart 7350, and Deskjet 3820 printers. I believe the ETA is July. They certainly do look cool...a few shots are below:

Wow Ken thanks
The info will help a lot (especially since I'm not paying for it) ...I don't think my clients will wait till August so the Canon looks like the ideal for now
Again thanks for all the help all

Whats the differance between a photo printer and lets just say a printer that has the same resolution?
I ask this because I am looking for somthing to replace my Epson 740 and I would like to get the C80, fast B&W, great resolution, and its rather cheap. I also see other Epsons with the same res, but slower times and bigger print areas whats the differance?

I believe there are extra shades of red (instead of just magenta) and blue (instead of just cyan). So the resolution is the same but the color range is much better, especially the skintones and the blacks and shadow areas and of course anything with lots of real reds and blues. All the photographers I work with use photo printers to print their portfolios. Most of the times it looks better than any offset printing and sometimes it actually rivals their prints because the colors "pop" so much better. Having said that, you do need to color correct and adjust your photos to make them really shine on the photo printers. Otherwise the difference won't be that noticeable.
I have an epson C80 and an epson stylus photo 1200. I don't know anything about the other printers that people are recommending, but don't get the epson 1520, it's pretty old (I bought one three years ago, still working though) and I don't know if it will have osx support.

Check out the Canon! I have the Canon S800 (which is last years model of the 900) and it is great. The 9000 is the wide version. Check out <a href="http://www.dpreview.com." target="_blank">www.dpreview.com.</a> It is a digital photo site and they have a printing forum that always has threads about printers.
Hope this helps.
