What's the best printer to get for a graphite iMac SE that would match, be high quality, and less than $200

Get an Epson Photo printer. I have the Epson Stylus Photo 870. I know there is a new replacement model out for about $150 after rebate. Mine is beige but with a smoke (almost graphite) colored window in the lid. It prints great photos and is very quick for regular printing, about 12ppm in black. I think it is the best printer I have ever used.

The 877 is the new Epson photo printer and I have an 880 (Epson also makes an 880i with a bondi blue cover). $129 at Fry's or Costco. The 880 is an "office" printer NOT a photo printer, but it is very quiet and fast and has both USB and parallel connectors. Prints up to 2880 dpi. Stick with Epson or HP and you will very likely have driver support in OS X right off the bat.

Oh, the 880i costs $139 at Fry's (the regular 880 is beige with a graphite window) and the 877 looks like it will cost $169 after the rebate.

I got the HP-970 inkjet DeskJet for $299. I highly recommend it--gorgeous output, duplex/double-sided printing, fast, and very quiet.

Consumer Reports recently rated the HP-970 the best printer you can buy at any price; much better than any Epson for text, and just as good for photos.

HP cartridges work in several different model types and therefore are a lot easier to find; while Epson seems to bring out a new cartridge for every new printer model. (Be aware, HP now makes the new "990"--it's a a bit faster than the 970 and has IrDA support--but I didn't think IrDA was worth the extra $100 in price.) iMacs haven't had IrDA since the Rev/A into 1998.

Also don't be swayed by manufacturers inflated claims of PPM or pages per minute--nobody I know ever prints in the "Draft Mode" used for their claims.

Check the USB printers out at any computer store. If you can afford it, give the HP's a close look. I looked pretty close at the Epson 777i ($99) and the Epson-870 ($149) and the associated cartridge costs--for me the more expensive HP-970 was best.

Good Luck, T.

I agree conusmables are a BIG deal with inkjet printers. Costco is the only place where I have seen anything close to reasonable prices on ink. 2 packs of ink for the new Epson printers run about $38 for black and $36 for color (why black costs more than color I have no idea). $18-$19 per cartridge is by far the best deal I could find for consumables for these Epson printers. MSRP is $10 more than that each.
