Not sure if this question is in the right forum, but. We have one of the new dual g4's that is slated to be installed into a secure room. As such the internal hard drive will be disabled and the system will need to be booted from various user external hard drives. The question is does anyone know of a commercial modification/accessory that will allow hard drives to be inserted into and out of the g4 tower. Looking in the g4, it doesn't look possible or simple. These insertable hard drives are common in the pc world for "dod" type computers. The best solution that I have found is just the typical external firewire hard drives (e.g. VST or APS), but everyone whines about transfer rate, which does seem slower than the internal ide drive (although not sure if they would notice). My solution is to use a firewire hub, then users could attach their favorite peripherals and not be constrained to any one system. Any other ideas???

Thanks ahead.

How about if you replace the CD drive with a removable IDE drive? The trays and hard drive carriers are common in the PC world (MegaHaus has them - search for DataPort IDE) and the CD bay is open to the outside world. I agree with you that FW would be easier, but removable IDEs would give users the higheswt possible transfer rates.
