Hello all!

I am looking at getting a Label printer for my office. In most cases we all print the same kinds of labels. I have only found one product, CoStar's LabelWriter Turbo series which is Mac compatible. The Label Printers seem great physically, but I am not impressed with their Mac support. It seems that their program integration is not that great, it supports few programs and their "Easy to Use" program looks like it was written in early System 7 days. This concerns me.

The other part that concerns me is that they have a Windows driver to share the printer, but nothing for Macs except the suggestion to use PortShare Pro which is not updated regularly itself.

Considering OS X may be user viable in a year or so and CoStar's Mac division is still in System 7 world and seem as motivated as a Turtle is fast, I am not real excited about plunking down $$$ for their product.

I would like a printer that is Mac compatible with good software and a history or good Mac support with the likelihood of the same down the road. Networking support, preferably via hardware, and the ability to hold 2 or more labels at the same time would be a plus.

Thanks

I use a lot of different Thermal Transfer printers and have yet to find one that will work on my Macs or I should say a driver for the Mac from Zebra so the $30,000 plus or so we have invested in these printers, which by the way is the only reason my printing shop has any windows machines.
Have you looked into Avery labels they basically run in any inkjet or laser printer, may not work but I thought I would mention it. If you find some thing post it please. I'll do the same

The new versions of the Costar (now Dymo) LabelWriters use a Chooser-based driver, so you can print from any application (like FileMaker Pro).

I've installed a couple so far and have been happy with their performance and reliability. I've been burned before (by Seiko) regarding Mac support, so I was wary about the EL series, but they've been working to fix problems (updated driver software).

The one thing I like about these printers is that eventually, they should be shareable via USB Printer sharing, but for now I'm using PortShare Pro without problems.

As for your assertion that Costar is stuck in Sys7 land, it does have some merit with the watered-down version of MacEnvelope that they bundle, but not so much with the driver itself.

If you have questions, post a note here-I'll be glad to answer any specific questions you might have, and, no, I don't work for Costar.
Cheers,
Jon

I know very little, if anything, about label printers. But I just this morning saw something that may be of interest to you in re your post. Here is an excerpt:
Product Description:
There has always been a lack of good label printing software for the Mac, particularly for stick-on labels. Companies that sell label design software for other operating systems offer difficult to use templates or simply terrible programs for the Mac. The Disk Label Printer Pro was created to give Mac users a simple yet powerful tool for printing stick-on labels. The Disk Label Printer Pro prints labels for many different formats using stick-on labels supplied by many different companies. You can find these labels at any computer or office supply store and on the web. We do not sell these labels, nor are we affiliated with any of the companies that do. We just provide a simple yet elegant solution for printing many different label formats.Just like our Ultimate Label Printer Pro, which prints case labels for over 50 different types of cases (CD, Zip, audio cassette, etc...), the Disk Label Printer Pro will be expanded using our Plug-In technology to support new media formats, and even other types of labels including mailing labels.

I also use the Disk Label Printer Pro software and it works great. For $40, you can get a downloadable bundle for from the company that makes it which includes Disk Label Printer Pro and Ultimate Label Printer Pro. This is everything you need to print Labels to CD Jewel cases. Can't find much it won't print, and it even allows you to import picts and other graphics for things like CD labels. I believe you can also download a demo to check it out and it works well with my HP Deskjet printer and I would assume it will work with any inkjet or laser printer. I know a few Label Printer like OS-204DT manufactured by ARGOX Information Co Ltd, Bandit manufactured by Checkpoint systems, C4 Thermal Printer manufactured by CIE America, DMX-E-3202 manufactured by Datamax Corporation and others all these printers supports 1D barcode Symbologies and also can be used for Label Printing applications. These Printers run on Windows OS and some may also support other OS. I think this will solve your problem but I don't know what specifications you are looking for in these printers like Print speed, Print width , Resolution and others. I suggest you to see www.SolveIT.com where you can find a lot of Label Printers manufactured by various companies and also if you have any queries you can ask expert advice. I strongly suggest you to check this option out and I am sure this should help you.

I know and I am 4 months late replying to you, so my timing is improving. Who knows it may be useful to anyone still seeking a label printer that works with Macintosh equipment.
