This seems like it ought to be easy, but for some reason I can't find an obvious solution and the local mac dealer wasn't all that much help. I'd like to buy a printer for an old mac -- specifically a powerbook 5300. Is it right that there are no longer any printers on the market that will connect to the old mac printer modem ports? If not, what are my options? I could only find PC-card USB ports for the CardBus powerbooks, and the old ones are PCMCIA. I have an ethernet PC Card, but network printers seem kind of expensive.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide. I can be E-mailed at jrh@dlc.ku.dk or jrhopper@mail.tele.dk

The Epson 740s are still available and they have the old style serial port. I don't know if the newer 740i has the old serial port, so you need to check carefully.

Unfortunately, the 740's were not marketed in Europe that I have been able to find and I can't find a European equivalent model that supports the old mac serial port.

I don't know about availability in Europe, but the Epson 900 also had a serial port. It was recently discontinued along with the 740 (the 740i is identical, just in multi-color plastic), but you may still be able to find that one.

The same company that makes the Power Print, Strydent Software, has a product called:

StyleScript 4.0 Serial To Parallel

i have used the older version of this cable on a LaserJet // and /// as well as a number of cheap parallel PC printers. it's not cheap at about $100 but it has served me very well for many years and will allow your 5300 to use just about any printer that has a parallel port.

1. the 740i is identical to the 740 except for the color of the plastics.

2. The 740 most definitely was sold in Europe -- I personally sold dozens of them when I worked at a computer store in Switzerland. However, it does seem, by looking at epson.dk, that Epson Denmark doesn't carry the 700-series (why, I don't see -- it's their most popular series). You might be able to get Epson Germany (epson.de) to send you one, or order one from a German or Swiss dealer. Another alternative would be to buy a surplus Stylus Color 800, 850, or a 900. (The 800/850 don't have USB, but they can be upgraded to USB, Ethernet, and even FireWire.)

For what it's worth, I own an 800 (in Switzerland) and a 740i (here in the US), and I love them both.

If you are looking for laser, you might look into an Okipage 4m, which I think is discontinued, but might still be available. It has a serial port, and is quite speedy for its price. Print quality is excellent.
