Re: Optical Mice review. Can anyone here tell me if any of the optical mice (spec. the Apple Pro) are compatible with a beige G3 with a USB card? If so, what is required? Also, performance compared to old adb mouse II or hockey puck mouse for Photoshop, Freehand, Illustrator work? Thanks.

I have a Macally iOptiNet Optical Scroll-wheel mouse with my Beige G3 tower with an OrangeMicro FireWire/USB card and it works great. The scroll-wheel adds some nice features to it. Performance is similar to the original ADB that came with my machine. I use it with PhotoShop, but not the others apps you mention. I have no complaints at all. I am very happy with the mouse.

The Kensington Mouse in a Box Optical Pro is a sweet four button optical which also includes a scrollwheel. It comes with Kensington Mouseworks 5.4.1 software. It's really an excellent mouse, and once you get used to the four button features and scrollwheel, you'll never want to go back.

ringos: Apple claims that the Pro Mouse will work with any USB Mac and I have heard of people with first gen iMacs using them.
As far as how good the Pro Mouse and other optical mice are for use with graphic processing applications, they are super. I have used a new iMac DV SE with the Apple Pro Mouse and I have used Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer on a MP G4 and I used a Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical on a Cube all with Photoshop 5.5 and all three worked great. Of the 3 I liked the Apple Pro Mouse best mainly because it felt the best. I liked the way the Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical felt also but I didn't care for the way the Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer felt in my hand. Out of the three I would buy the Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical because of the price and the extra buttons/scroll wheel.
Only down side is the cost and that it is lacking in buttons. I personally plan on getting a Kensington Optical Pro Mouse-In-A-Box, which fells a lot like the Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical, tomorrow from an Office Depot store were they are on sale right now (check your local listing). At my local Office Depot they are offering a $10 instant rebate and a $10 mail-in rebate making the final price $19.99 for one of the highest rated Optical Mice available.

The pro mouse should work fine on your Beige G3. I got a 7200/75 (No it's not my primary computer anymore) with a USB card and I got a MS Intellimouse Explorer plugged into it, it works fine, of course I need to install MS's software to get the addtional buttons programmable and scroll part programed but general mouse functions work fine without any software.
Make sure though that the USB software is installed becasue then the computer won't recognize the USB card.
