I just picked up a new Western Digital 100 gig hard drive from Sam's for $119. It's a 7200 rpm drive. I'm getting ready to pop it into my Dual 800 but need some advice on the best way to set up the partitions. I am currently running 9.2.2 on my Dual 800 until I learn more about OS X. I'm running X solely on my 500MHz iBook (well, whenever Apple finishes fixing the ^$%^ combo drive). Anyway, my plan is to move strictly to OS X in the next few months (by March probably). What would you do?

I don't do much with Photoshop but I am doing more and more with digital video and iMovie/FCP. I also have the stock 60 gig 7200rpm drive installed. Only other storage I have is an external 23 gig SCSI drive which currently holds all my MP3's and the contents of my 8500's hard drive that i haven't moved to the Dual 800 yet. So, give me what you consider to be the best options for partitioning this massive drive.
Yeah, about those TPS reports, didn't you get the memo?

The fewer the partitions the better, in general, I'd say.

Whenever I divvy up a drive into many partitions, I always end up un-partitioning it later. You just can't predict in advance how much space you'll need for DV, mp3, applications, backup, etc.

The only partitions I'd really suggest are:
* a small ~1gig partition for Classic & your classic apps.
* a medium ~8 gig partition for OS X, apps, and your non-media (small) documents.
* a big partition for all your media files. It's easier to have these separate so you can reinstall OS X cleanly if you need to.

I think that'd work fine.
