Three questions:
1) Theoretically isn't usb fast enough to burn at 4x's?
2) Doesn't it fall within the transfer parameters?
3) Is it the general consensus that 4x's burning is slow?

Yes, theoretically USB is fast enough for 4x burns, however, there are other devices on the chain which can slow it down. It's not a general consensus that 4x is really slow, but it is on the low end side of the CD burning market, meant for people who will only burn a few CDs or don't care about waiting a lot of time for a burn.

It's not the USB, more the skimpy 2mb of buffer size on the USB drives that mean that you have to write audio at 2x. Thats 34 minutes for a 74 minute cd. Firewire drives usually have 4mb of buffer. The problem is only with music files, because the limit to music can fit on a cd is limited to 74 minutes and not file size.

Regards.

I'm thinking of getting a USB external Drive to "feed" a 4X SCSI CD burner. Anyone have any thoughts on whether or not this will work?

So even though USB can read a 6x, is that unreliable to burn at? I need to get a burner, but of course it has to also work with a Win98 piece of....um, yah. I doubt anyone makes it, but I would love a firewire burner that has a USB adaptor to work with "non-firewire" computers....
