I have a G3 B&W 300 with a Scanmaker 3600 with similar problems. The driver and the ScanWizard 5.05 are not totally stable with certain models of Macs.

They say their working on it

With iMac and V6UPL, the first use was fine, thereafter it was not recognized. Microtek customer service said to return the scanner for a replacement!

From MacOS 8.1 to 8.6 I could not get the ScanMaker V6 UPL to be recognized on my iMac rev.A. until I installed OS9.
Make sure you have Apple Guide Extension installed for ScanWizard to work.
Hope this helps

Let me just add a word about Microtek.

About a year ago I bought their stand alone Scandeck and posed a question they couldn't answer at that time.

LAST WEEK my phone rang and it was Microtek responding to my question and asking a couple of their own! I'm impressed - how many companies keep track of customers concerns for even a minute!
